Đánh giá vết thương do mèo cào 

Nhận diện mèo. Điều quan trọng là phải có thông tin về con mèo vừa cào bạn. Nếu là mèo nhà bạn nuôi hoặc mèo của bạn thân bạn thì có thể coi đó là “mèo nhà”. Bạn có thể tự xử lý vết thương nếu không quá nặng, đồng thời biết chính xác thông tin về con mèo đó:

• Mèo đã được tiêm phòng vắc-xin đầy đủ.
• Mèo có sức khỏe tốt.
• Mèo hầu như ở trong nhà.

Tìm chăm sóc y tế nếu bạn không biết về con mèo đã cào bạn. Mèo lạ có thể không được tiêm vắc –xin, do đó bạn có thể cần điều trị phòng ngừa nhiễm vi khuẩn, uốn ván hoặc bệnh dại. Đặc biệt là khi vết cào kèm vết cắn (có đến 80% nguy cơ nhiễm trùng), bạn cần đến bác sĩ để được chăm sóc y tế.

Đánh giá vết thương. Cách điều trị thích hợp dựa vào độ nghiêm trọng của vết thương. Vết mèo cào nào cũng có thể gây đau, nhưng độ sâu của vết thương sẽ cho biết nó có trầm trọng hay không.

• Vết thương nông xảy ra ở lớp ngoài cùng của da và hơi rướm máu có thể coi là vết thương ngoài da.
• Vết thương sâu hơn xuyên qua nhiều lớp da và chảy máu khá nhiều có thể coi là nghiêm trọng

Quyết định cách điều trị thích hợp. Vết thương ngoài da do mèo nhà cào có thể xử lý ở nhà. Tuy nhiên, vết thương do mèo lạ cào hoặc vết thương nghiêm trọng (sâu) do mèo nhà cào cần được chuyên viên y tế đánh giá.
